This location will most likely NOT be open in 2025 or the foreseeable future. Why? The U.S. Forest Service has made significant cuts to its seasonal temporary workforce, the very boots-on-the-ground employees responsible for maintaining national forests. This decision, made to address a $750,000 payroll deficit for permanent year-round staff, has led to cost-saving measures of around $120-$150 million. These cuts affect essential services such as checking permits, maintaining facilities, and managing visitor experiences. This is part of a larger, nationwide issue impacting public access and resource care across the country.
🌋 Lava River Cave is one of the most awe-inspiring adventures within the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. Known for its fascinating geological history and sensitive bat habitat, the cave typically receives around 70,000 visitors during its operating season (early May to mid-September). - Essential Gear: Bring two reliable light sources and dress warmly. Flashlights and headlamps are available for rent, but having your own is always a good idea.
- Protect the Bats: Lava River Cave is home to bats vulnerable to White Nose Syndrome, a fungal disease. To prevent its spread, wear clothes and shoes that have not been used in other caves.
- Reservation Challenges: Timed-entry tickets can sell out quickly during peak season, so book early!

- A valid recreation pass is also required. Options include the Northwest Forest Pass or an America the Beautiful Interagency Pass. Day passes are available for purchase on-site.

- Dress for the Conditions: The average temperature inside the cave is a chilly 42°F. Wear warm clothing and sturdy, closed-toed shoes.
